James Clarke was born 6 Sep 1837 in Leisester, Leicestershire, England. We know nothing of his early life in England. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in England, baptized 1 Feb 1894.
He married Selina Wells ( Langton) a widow on the 2nd of August 1897. She had two children from an earlier marriage-Charles Langton, who was sealed to James and Selina Clarke, and Emily Langton who never joined the church. James Clarke and Selina had two children. They were John and Edward Charles Clarke.
James Clarke was a shoemaker by trade, and Selina worked in a butcher shop cutting meat. They immigrated to the United States on the 4th of June 1873. They lived on Monroe Avenue and 29th street in Ogden, Utah. Selina died in Ogden on the 15th of August 1889 and was buried in the Ogden City Cemetery.
On 9 Jun 1890 James Clarke married Mary Ann Frost (Carr). James Clarke and a Mr Payne had a Shoe Repair Shop on the south side of the first ally on Grant Avenue. When visiting him in his shop, Thomas LeRoy Clarke, a grandchild has fond memories. James would take a strap they put across the shoe on the last to hold the shoe down, and put him over his knee and give him a spat or two, and then kiss him and give him a nickel or a dime. In later years he built a shop of his own on the back of his home were he worked until he died.
James and Mary Ann liked to have children and grand children eat with them, and they had a cellar where they always had some home made root beer which they all enjoyed very much. He got a lot of joy out of raising a nice garden, also a few chickens and the fattest pig each year that anyone could find.
Very late in life, when he was about 75 or 80, he would walk from his home in Ogden, out to Taylor, about 8 miles. He would bring with him his dog Prince, when he walked out. He died 2 Aug 1920, at the age of 82 years and 11 months, at 2:30 pm. He died of cancer of the liver. He was buried in the Ogden City Cemetery, Ogden, Utah.
